Resin buildup is inevitable. Dirty glass tastes bad, reduces airflow, and looks terrible. The good news: you don't need expensive glass cleaners, soaking kits, or anything special. Isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt will get your piece cleaner in 10 minutes than most people get it with dedicated cleaning products.

What You Need

  • Isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher) — The higher the percentage, the better it cuts resin. 70% works in a pinch but takes longer. You'll find 91%+ at most pharmacies.
  • Coarse salt — Kosher salt or coarse sea salt. The large granules act as an abrasive without scratching glass. Table salt is too fine to be effective.
  • Ziploc bags (or a container with a lid) — For smaller pieces: pipes, stems, downstems, bowls. For bongs, you can plug the holes and shake directly.
  • Rubber bands or hand towels — To plug the openings on your bong while you shake.
  • Paper towels or cotton swabs — For any remaining residue in tight spots.

Step-by-Step: Cleaning a Pipe or Small Piece

  1. Rinse first. Run warm (not boiling) water through the piece to loosen any large debris. This makes the iso+salt do less work.
  2. Put the piece in a Ziploc bag. Make sure it's a size that lets the piece move around freely.
  3. Add isopropyl alcohol. Enough to submerge or coat the piece. Don't be stingy — you can reuse the iso for a second pass if it's not too dirty.
  4. Add a generous amount of coarse salt. A tablespoon or two for a small pipe. More for larger pieces. The salt won't dissolve in the iso, which is the whole point.
  5. Seal the bag and shake. Hard. For 30–60 seconds. The salt acts as a scrubber, and the alcohol dissolves the resin simultaneously. You'll see the liquid turn brown as it works.
  6. Let it soak (optional). For heavily built-up resin, let the piece soak for 15–30 minutes after the initial shake, then shake again.
  7. Rinse thoroughly. Use warm water and make sure all the iso is flushed out before using the piece. ISO has a strong smell that lingers if you don't rinse completely.
  8. Detail with cotton swabs. Hit any remaining residue in corners, carb holes, or the bowl with a swab soaked in iso. It comes off with almost no effort at this point.

Cleaning a Bong

The process is the same but you work directly with the bong instead of a bag. Pour iso and salt directly into the chamber, plug the mouthpiece with your palm (or a folded paper towel), cover the downstem hole with your other hand, and shake vigorously. Let it soak if needed, then rinse thoroughly. Clean the downstem and bowl separately in a Ziploc using the same method.

Tips for Keeping Glass Cleaner Longer

  • Change your water every session. Stale bong water is the main reason pieces get dirty fast. Fresh water every time makes cleaning much less frequent and much easier.
  • Don't let resin harden. Fresh resin cleans in minutes. Old, baked-on resin takes real effort. A quick rinse with iso after every few uses prevents major buildup.
  • Dry your piece after cleaning. Water spots are mostly cosmetic but they're annoying. A paper towel through the chamber and a few minutes of air drying takes care of it.
  • 91%+ iso is significantly better than 70%. The extra few dollars at the pharmacy is worth it every time.

That's it. No special products, no soaking overnight, no scrubbing with pipe cleaners that scratch glass. Iso + salt in a ziploc is the method experienced smokers use because it actually works. Once you try it, you'll stop buying dedicated glass cleaners.
