Smalls — small buds trimmed from the same plant as premium flower — are one of the best value plays in the THCA market. Here's the full breakdown.

What Are Smalls?

During harvest, larger "top cola" buds are separated from smaller buds lower on the plant. These smaller buds (usually under 1 gram each) have the same genetics, same THCA content, and same terpene profile as the premium buds — they're just smaller and less visually impressive.

The Price Difference

Smalls typically sell for 40–60% less than premium buds from the same strain and vendor. A premium indoor ounce might run $200; the same strain's smalls might be $90–$120. The price gap is almost entirely cosmetic.

What You're Actually Giving Up

  • Bag appeal — Smalls look smaller and less impressive. If you're buying for aesthetics or gifting, this matters.
  • Slightly more stem/leaf ratio — Not significant but worth noting.
  • Grinding is slightly different — Smaller buds break down faster in a grinder.

What You're Not Giving Up

  • THCA potency — identical to premium from the same batch
  • Terpene profile — same plant, same harvest
  • Effect — indistinguishable when smoked or vaped

Best Use Cases for Smalls

Daily use, joints, blunts, grinding, cooking — any application where you're not displaying the flower. For bowls and bongs where you're grinding anyway, smalls are the obvious value play.
