What You Need
- Dab rig — a water pipe designed for concentrates. Can be as simple as a $30 mini rig.
- Banger/nail — the quartz bucket you heat. Quartz is preferred over titanium or glass for flavor.
- Torch — a butane torch, not a lighter. Needed to reach 400–600°F.
- Dab tool — a metal or glass wand to scoop concentrate.
- Concentrate — rosin, live resin, badder, wax, diamonds, or shatter.
- Carb cap — covers the banger to trap vapor. Essential for low-temp dabs.
The Basic Process
- Heat the banger with the torch until it glows slightly red (about 30–45 seconds for standard quartz)
- Let it cool — this is the most important step beginners skip. Wait 30–45 seconds for a standard banger. You want 450–550°F, not red-hot.
- Drop a small amount of concentrate (rice grain size to start) into the banger using the dab tool
- Cover immediately with the carb cap and inhale slowly
- Clean the banger while warm with a cotton swab
Temperature Is Everything
- Too hot (600°F+) — harsh, burnt flavor, wastes terpenes
- Ideal (450–550°F) — smooth, full flavor, efficient
- Too cold (below 400°F) — concentrate puddles without vaporizing
A digital thermometer or e-nail removes the guesswork entirely. Highly recommended for beginners.
Start Small
THCA concentrates are significantly more potent than flower. Start with a rice-grain-sized dab — you can always do more. The effect from a single small dab hits in 1–2 minutes and peaks at 5–10 minutes.
