THCA flower degrades when exposed to light, heat, air, and moisture. Proper storage keeps it potent and flavorful for months. Here's exactly what to do.

The Main Enemies

  • UV light — breaks down cannabinoids and terpenes quickly. Never store in clear containers near windows.
  • Heat — accelerates degradation. Ideal storage temp is 60–70°F (15–21°C).
  • Air/oxygen — oxidizes cannabinoids. Minimize headspace in storage containers.
  • Humidity extremes — too dry (below 55% RH) causes trichome loss; too humid (above 65% RH) risks mold.

Best Storage Methods

Short term (1–2 months)

An airtight glass jar in a cool, dark drawer or cabinet. Mason jars work perfectly. Keep it away from heat sources like ovens and electronics. A 62% RH Boveda pack inside the jar maintains ideal humidity automatically.

Medium term (2–6 months)

Same as above but add an oxygen absorber alongside the humidity pack. Keep jars in the refrigerator if your ambient temperature runs above 70°F regularly. Important: let the jar come to room temperature before opening to prevent condensation.

Long term (6+ months)

Vacuum seal in small batches, then freeze. Frozen flower retains potency for a year or more but must be handled carefully when frozen — trichomes become brittle and shatter easily. Let it thaw fully at room temperature before opening the sealed bag.

What to Avoid

  • Plastic bags — create static, allow air exchange
  • Grinders as storage — oxygen exposure, residue buildup
  • The refrigerator without vacuum sealing — humidity fluctuations damage flower
  • Storing multiple strains in one container — terpene cross-contamination is real

Signs of Degraded Flower

Harsh smoke, muted smell, crumbly texture, or a hay-like aroma all indicate degradation. Degraded flower is still technically usable but potency and flavor will be significantly reduced.
